Preparing for Your Portrait Session

I created this guide for my portrait clients, and thought it might be useful to share here for anyone who’s considering booking, or who might be prepping for their own portrait session. This is definitely not an exhaustive list but hopefully works as a good starting point to get the most out of your session.

Hey there! I'm excited to work with you on creating some amazing portraits. To help you get the most out of our time together, I've put together this guide with everything you need to know before your shoot.

What to Bring

  • 3-4 outfit changes to give us variety in your shots.

  • Any accessories that reflect your personality (jewelry, hats, glasses, etc.)

  • Your instruments or tools of your craft if you'd like them featured.

  • Any makeup and hair products you might need for touchups.

  • Snacks! If you’re coming to the studio we’re right in the city centre but getting hangry mid-shoot isn’t ideal.

What to Wear

  • Choose clothes that make you feel confident and comfortable

  • Solid colors generally photograph better than busy patterns

  • Layer pieces to create different looks quickly (especially helpful if we’re on location)

  • Make sure your clothes are wrinkle-free. There is an iron/board in the studio if needed.

Before the Shoot

  • Get a good night's sleep

  • Stay hydrated the day before and day of

  • Where possible, arrive with hair/makeup ready to go, or allow time for this if you’re doing it in studio.

During the Session

  • We'll start with a brief chat about your goals and the plan for the session

  • I'll guide you through poses and expressions if you need help with that

  • Feel free to take breaks whenever needed, it can be tiring being ‘on’ constantly

  • We can review images as we go

That's totally normal! We'll take it slow, and I'll guide you every step of the way. Most people find themselves relaxing and having fun within the first 15 minutes.

Can I bring a friend?

Absolutely! Having a familiar face around can help you feel more comfortable.

When will I see my photos?

You'll receive a gallery of previews within 7 days of your session from which you can make your selects for editing. If you need anything for a quick turnaround, please make sure you discuss this in advance.

What if I need to reschedule?

Life happens! Just give me at least 48 hours' notice, and we'll find a new date that works.

Can I bring props?

Yes! Props that represent you and your work are always welcome. Let's discuss your ideas beforehand to make sure they'll work well in the studio.
