Niall Strachan Artist

I visited Niall Strachan in his studio recently to shoot some portraits. I’ve known him since he was making music as Bronto Skylift and latterly Garden of Elks. Since then, he’s turned to visual arts and creates incredibly bold and visceral paintings, on pretty much any surface he has around. From large formate canvases to the backs of Amazon boxes. It was amazing to see the breadth and scale of his work in the studio.

I didn’t have much of a plan for this, other than a vague notion that it would be cool to make Niall appear like a subject in one of his own paintings. That was the last shot of the day, and the first one here.

There was a lot of colour around in his paintings, and with some gelled flashes (loving the Godox AD200s at the minute, so small and functional) and dragged shutter, this is what happened.

Otherwise, a few more colourful splashes and some wider shots to show off his working space.
